Tanning: Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the primary active ingredient in sunless tanning products, allowing users to achieve a tan without sun exposure. Hair Coloring: DHA can be used in hair care products to darken hair, conceal white hairs, and color hair without damaging its structure. UVA Protection: DHA has shown some UVA protection (1.7 to 2.2 UVA protection factor), but it does not protect against UVB rays.
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is primarily known for its role in cosmetic products like sunless tanning lotions. It works by reacting with amino acids in the skin's surface, creating a temporary darkening effect that mimics a tan. This reaction, called the Maillard reaction, produces brown-colored pigments called melanoidins.
